WWW WEDNESDAY: January 27th, 2016

WWW Wednesdays

Today has been one of those days where nothing seems to go right. This would have been up earlier if it wasn’t for my usual browser crashing (Damn you Safari!) and I’ve also been worrying over my poor puppy who had an operation today. She’s fine, but she isn’t happy.

Anyways, for those of you who don’t know, WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Taking On A World of Words where three question are asked:

What are you currently reading?

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Twenty eight florins a month is a huge price to pay, for a man to stand between you and the Wild.

Twenty eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern’s jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men – or worse, a company of mercenaries – against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.

It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he’s determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an Abbess and her nunnery, it’s just another job. The abby is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can’t deal with.

Only it’s not just a job. It’s going to be a war…

Don Tillman and Rosie Jarman are back. If you were swept away by Graeme Simsion’s international smash hit The Rosie Project, you will love The Rosie Effect.

The Wife Project is complete, and Don and Rosie are happily married and living in New York. But they’re about to face a new challenge.

Rosie is pregnant.

Don sets about learning the protocols of becoming a father, but his unusual research style gets him into trouble with the law. Fortunately his best friend Gene is on hand to offer advice: he’s left Claudia and moved in with Don and Rosie.

As Don tries to schedule time for pregnancy research, getting Gene and Claudia back together, servicing the industrial refrigeration unit that occupies half his apartment, helping Dave the Baseball Fan save his business and staying on the right side of Lydia the social worker, he almost misses the biggest problem of all: he might lose Rosie when she needs him most.

Get ready to fall in love all over again.

I am still reading The Red Knight by Miles Cameron and I swear this book is taking forever to read! Admittedly I only read 9 pages over the last week, but those were a long 9 pages! I’m also reading The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion, the sequel to The Rosie Project, and I admit this has been hard reading for me too, but only because I have been in the mood to read contemporary fiction recently.

What did you recently finish?

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war – and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

Meet Don Tillman. Don is getting married. He just doesn’t know who to yet. But he has designed a very detailed questionnaire to help him find the perfect woman. One thing he already knows, though, is that it’s not Rosie. Absolutely, completely, definitely not.

Over the last week I have read 5 books, which I think is pretty good. Since there’s so many I’m going to list these books starting with my favourite, working to my least favourite:

  1. Eon: Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman
  2. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
  3. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
  4. Shadow Sight by E. J. Stevens
  5. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

What do you think you’ll read next?

Synopsis from Goodreads:

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE
From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

At a guess I think I will read All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr as I am slowly getting in the mood for that sort of book.

Sorry for the bloody long post this week. The reviews for those books will be up sometime soon. Also I’ve been updating what I’m reading and what I want to read a lot on Goodreads recently, so if you want to check that out click here.

Go ahead and leave the link for your WWW Wednesday post (if you have one, obviously) in the comments so I can check it out.

Happy reading!

  1. Oh dear. I was going to ask what you thought of Shatter Me and then I saw it was your least favourite 😦 I still haven’t been convinced to read the series because the reviews I’ve seen are either “loved it” or “avoid!”.
I’m still not in the mood for All The Light You Cannot See either. I went through a long run of WWII-based books a while back and I’m still not past it. I’m sure it’s wonderful, but I want to be in the right mood so I can do it justice.

    1. Unfortunately Shatter Me was a let down. The writing style was ridiculous, there was no suspense, and talk about insta-love! I will probably write a review for it. I am going to suggest you avoid it.
That’s exactly why I haven’t read it yet. I want to read it and do it justice, not sit there wanting it to be over because I’m not in the mood for it. That’s a problem right now though because I’m in the mood for fantasy books and I may or may not have read most of them that are in my TBR pile…

  2. I hope you’re able to get into ‘The Rosie Effect.’ It’s hard when you’re not in the mood for something you want to read. Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!
