Smaller WWW Wednesdays

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Taking On A World of Words where three question are asked:

What are you currently reading?

“Gripping, enthralling – a top-notch thriller and a compulsive read”. (S J Watson, bestselling author of Before I Go To Sleep). Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens. She’s even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. ‘Jess and Jason’, she calls them. Their life – as she sees it – is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Now Rachel has a chance to become a part of the lives she’s only watched from afar. Now they’ll see; she’s much more than just the girl on the train.

I am reading The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. It’s OK so far as it’s very well written, but I really do not like the protagonist Rachel. She’s irritating, and self-absorbed, and obsessive over her ex-husband. I really don’t like her, and that’s going to make reading the rest of the book really hard.

What did you recently finish?

A child of a hoarder—an outcast growing up amid shocking squalor—finds purpose in this vivid memoir. Broken, alone and buried in a house full of junk and shame, Eddy Gilmore takes the “normal” route out—institutionalized learning. But when college life fails to offer meaning, the young man reaches a turning point, a point at which he abandons social norms, abandons the status quo, and strikes out on his own. A lifetime of adventure packed into a nine-month “gestational” period awaits: face-to-face encounters with wildlife, a devastating monsoon, a magical winter near the Canadian border, the kindness of strangers. Gilmore’s quest for knowledge and wisdom through experience, adventure, faith, and books will engage you as the author comes to fully experience the world for the first time.

I recently finished The Emancipation of a Buried Man by Eddy Gilmore. WOW. Just wow. That’s all I can say to describe it right now. I’m going to link you to my review because it’s something that’s hard to fully describe because it needs more than just a synopsis. So click here, and sorry about the self-promotion. This time can’t be helped.

What do you think you’ll read next?

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. The black sign, painted in white letters that hangs upon the gates, reads:

Opens at Nightfall

Closes at Dawn

As the sun disappears beyond the horizon, all over the tents small lights begin to flicker, as though the entirety of the circus is covered in particularly bright fireflies. When the tents are all aglow, sparkling against the night sky, the sign appears.

Le Cirque des Rêves

The Circus of Dreams.

Now the circus is open.

Now you may enter.

I am thinking I’ll read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, but I have some new books on their way so I’m not entirely sure. If not The Night Circus then The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon, the second book in The Bone Season series.

Paige Mahoney has escaped the brutal prison camp of Sheol I, but her problems have only just begun: many of the survivors are missing and she is the most wanted person in London…

As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on the dreamwalker, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city’s gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take centre stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner.

Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided.

  1. ‘The Night Circus’ is amazing! I hope you can read it soon, it’s a must read in my opinion. I’ve heard similar complains about ‘The Girl on the Train.’ Whenever something is hyped as ‘The next [insert popular book here],’ I get skeptical. I hope you can find some enjoyment in it. Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!

    1. I hopefully will read it soon. If I continue to hate the main character in The Girl on the Train this much I’m probably going to give up and switch to that. Happy reading!

  2. I always hate it when I don’t like the main character and therefore cannot enjoy the rest of the story! I haven’t read The Girl On The Train myself yet, but I’ve had it on my wishlist for a while now. The Night Circus is also waiting on my TBR shelf; I’ve heard so many great things about it that I can’t wait to finally read it.

    Happy reading! Here’s my WWW.

    1. I wish I could be like that, but unfortunately for me I have to be able to connect the characters to like the story, and this case I just can’t. Hopefully the Night Circus will be as good as everyone says it is 🙂

  3. I agree that Rachel in The Girl on the Train is a horrid character, and I’m stalled on this one (though I want to finish it for some reason) because I don’t like her or any of the other characters!
